Bush in May take been making it impossible for many foreign artists to get into the country in time for their scheduled appearances. You might await delays for performers from Iraq and Libya, but why Cuba, Russia and Northern Republic of ireland? From the Afro-Cuban All Stars, a pop Buena Vista Social Guild spinoff that was merely forced to cancel a five-calendar week U.S. tour, to Iranian managing director Abbas Kiarostami, who missed the premiere of his new flick "X" at the New York Motion-picture show Festival a calendar week ago, scores of performers take establish just how narrow the United States' open doors have get post-9-xi. Hardest hit have been those from vii nations designated in the new U.Southward. Enhanced Edge Security and Visa Reform Act every bit "state sponsors of terrorism": Iraq, Iran, Syrian arab republic, Libya, North Korea, Sudan and Cuba. Anyone from those countries, artist or non, must at present submit to lengthy background checks past the FBI. In addition, the U.Southward. government now requires a 20-24-hour interval wait on applications from citizens of 26 countries (the State Department declines to identify them, but they are believed to be mostly Islamic nations in Asia and North Africa). Add to this brew backups at the Immigration and Naturalization Service, and y'all have a recipe for creative constipation. It once took weeks to go a U.S. visa; information technology can now take six months—and no ane seems to accept warned artists near the delay."

Review by Amazon.com
A rousing ensemble recording, A Todo Republic of cuba Le Gusta features a ring made upwards largely of Cuban music elders. As a reflection of their collective experience playing multiple percussion instruments and brightly lit trumpets, the Afro-Cuban All Stars churn with high drama, fifty-fifty while playing music that'due south paced with extravagant patience. The time signatures overlay and run against each other in a casual trot while the trumpets blare with fat fullness. Add to that the impassioned group vocals and you've got a difficult-to-beat Cuban traditional music session. --Andrew Bartlett

Foggy Bottom Breakdown
The Afro-Cuban All Stars Polish at Lisner, 4/28/03
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, April 28, 2003; Folio C01
The concert by the Afro-Cuban All Stars was on the verge of condign a lawless dance party even before a pregnant woman in a black Lycra top climbed onstage and began to shimmy with the ring. Simply when she lifted her shirt and proudly flashed the world her bulging abdomen, whatever inhibitions had kept this capacity crowd in its seats on Saturday night were suddenly gone.
It was exhibition time. Bandleader Juan De Marcos issued a one-word directive -- "Dance!" -- and before you could say "Well, look who took salsa lessons," some 25 couples were twirling on the stage at Lisner Auditorium. Hundreds more than clogged the aisles. It took a vocal alter and 10 minutes to restore lodge.
The Afro-Cuban All Stars are based in Havana, and you lot can't spotter them unhinge an audience without pondering Castro-way communism for at least a moment. Repressing a nation of millions for more than than 40 years can't exist simple, but repressing a nation that makes music as liberating and spirited equally the sons, mambos and cha-chas of this 17-member jazz orchestra -- that must take difficult work and a twisted kind of genius.
Of course, political subtexts seem beside the signal when the Afro-Cuban All Stars are swinging, and they were swinging nearly every moment of this prove. This is the latest touring incarnation of the ring assembled by De Marcos, a singer and guitarist and the mastermind of "The Buena Vista Social Club," the projection that first brought international acclamation to a collection of long-retired Cuban jazz giants. The stars of that movie and its soundtrack -- amongst them, Ibrahim Ferrer and Compay Segundo -- have spun off to solo careers, so for this excursion De Marcos recruited a new and (for the most office) younger batch of talent.
Judging from the music and reaction it won on Saturday nighttime, the Afro-Cuban franchise volition exist around for a long time. From the opener, "Tanga," the group wed a Latin big-ring audio to styles that are relatively new, like funk, and others that are classics updated for theoccasion (boleros and timbas). It's a petty bit Desi Arnaz, a little bit John Coltrane, with a impact of Parliament and but enough 2003 in there to keep it from seeming stuck in a golden age.
The merely things truly retro were the suits. Cuba appears to exist the land that time forgot -- and with the exception of conga player Adel Gonzalez Gomez, who dressed in the dark bluish sport jacket and red necktie of a Federal Merchandise Committee staffer, the phase was awash in colors that oasis't been seen in public since that volcano ruined Pompeii. The most striking belonged to the diminutive and graying Ignacio Carrillo, one of the three rotating lead singers in the band, who ambled onstage in a magenta suit and earned some continuing ovations earlier singing a note by smile impishly and curtsying to the crowd.
He, in turn, was upstaged past the dancing of Pedrito Calvo, the erstwhile pb singer of a hugely popular Havana ring called Los Van Van. Wearing a brimmed white chapeau with a nighttime blue bandana hanging out the back like a raccoon's tail, and looking as solidly built as a linebacker, Calvo nuzzled a redhead in a black cocktail dress whom he plucked out of the audience during one of his handful of performances.
Calvo later yielded the stage to Luis Frank, a beefy and smooth-toned vocalist who had the misfortune of taking the microphone but when a beau in the audience got an epic case of dance fever. The lad helped himself onstage and did a jig that and so thoroughly robbed the mildly irked Frank of the spotlight that he finally shook this interloper's mitt and shooed him off the phase.
Obviously, not a lot of shy people at this event.
There wasn't a weak link in the band. Pianist David Alfaro Garcia shined on "Tribute to O'Farrill," while trombonist Juan Carlos Marin Eloseguy scored sentimental points with a solo he took during a vocal written for his married woman to mark their 3rd ceremony. Gomez had the stage to himself before the ring returned for an encore, and he used it for a four-minute brandish of conga-pounding, eliciting a reaction yous encounter in Earth Cup soccer when a team scores.
Only De Marcos spoke English to the oversupply, and it's safe to assume that at best half of this strikingly diverse oversupply spoke Spanish. But the words don't matter much for a song like "Maria Caracoles," a tune most a human being begging a woman to stop dancing. Only she can't help herself.
And at Lisner, even those who understood those lyrics kept on shaking, too.

The classic Son, predecessor of mambo and today's salsa starts off this CD. The first matter you hear that hits you like a ton of bricks is the contumely section'due south pure big band sound of the belatedly forty's and early 50's. What's highly-seasoned throughout this CD and the others to follow is the strong brass, percussion and piano execution (real piano). Nosotros get a hint of Mr. Rubn Gonzlez who as well Chucho Valdes are 2 of the greatest pianist alive. His playing is exquisite (more on Rubn later). The coro is tightly harmonized and the Cha Cha never sounded then good.
